Which Temple City Records Are Open
Temple City public records do not sit in one database. The City Clerk route covers municipal business, but Los Angeles County serves as recorder, assessor, election authority, trial-court jurisdiction, vital-record issuer, and sheriff agency. California agencies add statewide licenses, business filings, custody data, archives, and unclaimed property. Access depends on the record, not just the fact that a public office holds it.
| Record set | Official keeper | Web index | Coverage | Access route |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| City files, permits, license updates | Temple City | Partial | Current and archived city files | City archives or CPRA form |
| Deeds, liens, affidavits | LA County RR/CC | No official internet index | Since 1851 | Norwalk inspection or copy request |
| Parcel assessments | LA County Assessor | Yes | Current assessment roll | Free AIN or address search |
| Trial-court cases | Los Angeles Superior Court | Yes, fee-based by name | Varies by case type | Online, court terminal, or clerk request |
| Birth, death, marriage | LA County RR/CC and CDPH | Historical indexes only | Varies by record and source | Authorized or informational copy request |
| Jail and state custody | LASD and CDCR | Yes | Current custody | Free official lookup |
| State licenses and businesses | DCA and Secretary of State | Yes | Current and some filing history | Free search; copy fees may apply |
Open does not mean unrestricted. Sealed and juvenile court files, adoption records, protected addresses, confidential voter details, restricted military discharges, and some law-enforcement records remain closed or limited. Vital records use copy-eligibility rules. A voter status tool is a self-lookup, while access to the voter file requires an approved purpose. The full voter process belongs in the Temple City voter registration search.
Temple City Records Begin Locally
The city’s records page sorts local files into useful channels. Council agendas and staff reports use the agenda search. Agreements, ordinances, building permits, and Community Development Department business-license updates have their own archive or listing paths. Records not found there can go through the city request process. A specific request should name the record type, dates, subject, title, address, permit number, or other known identifier.
City copies cost $0.50 for the first page and $0.10 for each added page. Building plans follow a different path: the city does not make those copies directly, and a certified reprographer must reproduce them at the requester’s cost. Business-license application information is generally subject to disclosure, but financial data, Social Security or tax ID numbers, credit-card information, billing details, and other exempt data are withheld.
Temple City’s official public-records page is the best first check for a municipal archive. It can prevent an unneeded request and shows when a county agency, rather than City Hall, owns the file.
Note: Temple City’s form can send an email copy of the submission, which helps preserve the exact scope and wording of a request.
Temple City Deed Records Stay Offline
Los Angeles County’s official real-estate index is not an open web database. The Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk keeps real-estate records since 1851 in alphabetical indexes by name and recording year. Records from 1851 through 1957 are reviewed on the lower level at Norwalk Headquarters, while the 1958-to-present set is reviewed on the second floor. Appointments may be set up to two weeks ahead. Telephone index searches are not accepted.
This is a key Temple City records quirk. Government Code § 6254.21 limits online posting of certain officials’ home addresses. Because the county cannot identify every protected person in each recorded document, the recorder does not post the official index online. An open record can therefore require in-person inspection or a copy request. A document number or book and page makes a later order much easier.
The LA County recorder’s document guide shows the record groups that may connect parties to land.
Deeds identify grantors and grantees, while affidavits of death, liens, homesteads, reconveyances, and notices can identify trustees, surviving owners, lenders, claimants, and declarants. The recorder’s viewing instructions control the appointment and floor-by-year workflow.
Temple City Court Records Access
Temple City has no separate municipal court record system. Los Angeles Superior Court holds the local civil, criminal, family, probate, small-claims, and traffic case systems. A known case number leads to case access. A party or defendant name can be used to find a case number, but each name search carries an electronic public-access fee under California Rule of Court 2.506 and Government Code § 68150(l). A user may enter as a guest or create an account.
| Portal field or control | Use | Required | Access note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Case Number | Open a known case | Yes for direct case access | Images and copies may cost extra |
| Party or Defendant Name | Find a case number | Yes for a name search | Each search has a public-access fee |
| Case category | Choose the proper division | Path dependent | Civil, criminal, family, probate, and other routes differ |
| Guest or registered user | Enter paid online services | Yes | Fee terms differ by access mode |
| Document image | Review a public filing | Case dependent | Remote images are not available in every matter |
The Los Angeles Superior Court online-services screen displays the case routes and fee notice.
A docket is the case’s event list, not the full file. Public courthouse terminals may show more than the remote portal, and certified or archived copies may require the clerk. Juvenile, sealed, adoption, and sensitive files are not open web material.
Temple City Property Records by Address
The LA County Assessor Portal searches current parcels by property address or AIN, short for Assessor’s Identification Number. It also offers a map mode. Direct owner-name searching was not found in the public interface, so the parcel system is not a countywide name directory. Start with the address or AIN, then use ownership request channels and recorder documents when the deed trail matters.
A situs address is the parcel’s physical location. A mailing address is where tax or assessment notices go. The two may differ when property is inherited, held in a trust or company, occupied by someone other than the owner, or owned by someone who lives elsewhere. The mailing address may therefore be more useful, but it should not be treated as proof of a person’s current home.
The LA County Assessor Portal links the parcel number, location, assessed value context, and map. Building permits add project contacts and work descriptions through Temple City’s archive or request route. Owner fraud alerts from the Assessor and recorder are meant to help an owner spot suspicious recorded activity, not to monitor someone else’s land.
Temple City Vital Records Copies
Birth, death, and marriage certificates for Temple City events come from Los Angeles County RR/CC, while the California Department of Public Health handles statewide records, forms, amendments, and divorce certificates. These are copy-eligible records, not a fully public name index. Under Health and Safety Code § 103526, an authorized certified copy requires the proper relationship or authority and a sworn statement. An informational copy may be available, but it is marked as informational and cannot establish identity.
The CDPH vital-record application center provides forms VS 111 for birth, VS 112 for death, VS 113 A for marriage, VS 113 B for divorce, and VS 20 for the sworn statement. A 2026 schedule implements a $2 AB 64 increase for certified copies of birth, marriage, death, fetal death, and dissolution certificates, so the live order page should be checked before payment.
Historical indexes offer a second channel. Library and archive sources include the California Death Index, older marriage indexes, FamilySearch’s Los Angeles County marriage films, and California State Archives county holdings. A divorce decree remains a court document even when CDPH can issue a certificate of record.
Temple City Public Records Custodians
The most reliable route is the office that created or now preserves the record. Temple City City Clerk channels handle local government files. County departments take over property, court, vital, election, and sheriff materials. These contact cards keep the four most useful custody points distinct.

Temple City Sheriff Records Route Out
Sheriff reports are not stored at City Hall. Temple City contracts for law-enforcement service through LASD, so incident-report questions go to Temple Station or the LASD Records and Identification Bureau. The station accepts local routing questions and complaints by phone or in person. The Records Bureau handles report-copy procedures. That agency split is easy to miss because the station sits inside Temple City.
The LASD Inmate Locator is a separate free tool for current county custody.
Its fields include last, first, and middle name, date of birth, and a clothing-and-property disposition option. Results concern custody status and location, not a full criminal history. For state prison custody, CDCR’s CIRIS returns name, CDCR number, age, location, commitment county, admission date, and parole-hearing data.
Temple City Safety Records Have Limits
California’s Megan’s Law service publishes certain registered sex-offender information under Penal Code § 290.46 for public safety. The scope is set by law, and the data must not be used to threaten, harass, or harm anyone. A registry result also does not replace the court file tied to a case.
The California DOJ registry explanation describes the official search and its legal boundaries.
The state reports that law enforcement updates the registry daily. Protected-address programs also matter. California Safe at Home lets eligible participants use a substitute address in government dealings, and a records search should never try to defeat that protection.
Use records lawfully. Open access does not permit stalking, intimidation, exposure of a protected address, or harassment of a person or household.
State Records Beyond Temple City
California’s agency systems fill gaps that city and county files cannot. DCA searches professional licenses by first name, last name, license number, business name, registry number, and board or bureau. Secretary of State bizfile covers corporations, limited liability companies, limited partnerships, and filing images, while its UCC tool covers financing-statement abstracts. The State Archives preserves older county deeds, probate, naturalization, Great Registers, and vital-record groups.
The California unclaimed-property search accepts a last or business name or a property ID, with first name, city, and ZIP as optional filters.
The State Controller charges no fee to search or claim through the official process. A city or address in a result can help separate people with the same name, while the holder and property type explain why the state has the asset.
The California Personnel Office Directory provides names and official contact details for state agency personnel offices.
It is an agency-contact directory rather than a broad roster of all state workers. Its value is finding the office that can identify a state record custodian or route a focused request.
Temple City Records Terms Decoded
Access notices use a few terms with precise meanings. Knowing them prevents a request for the wrong item and helps distinguish a search result from an official copy.
- Custodian
- The office responsible for keeping and responding for a record.
- Index
- A finding list with names, dates, numbers, or document types. It is not the full document image.
- Certified copy
- A copy authenticated by the keeper as a true copy of its official record.
- Exemption
- A law that permits or requires an agency to withhold all or part of a record.
- Docket
- The court’s list of filings, hearings, orders, and other case events.
- Grantor and grantee
- The party transferring an interest and the party receiving it in a recorded instrument.
Request Temple City Public Records
The California Public Records Act, Government Code § 7920.000 et seq., lets any person request nonexempt agency records. The agency generally has 10 days to decide whether responsive records are disclosable, with a possible 14-day extension for unusual circumstances. That is a determination period, not a promise that every production will finish in 10 days. Agencies may charge direct duplication costs and record-specific statutory fees.
- Name the right custodian. Use Temple City for municipal files, RR/CC for deeds and county vital records, the court for case files, and LASD for sheriff reports.
- Check the published channel. Search the city archive, assessor portal, court service, custody lookup, or state database before filing a request.
- Describe the record, not a question. Give a record type, subject, date range, address, case number, document number, or department. Keep the scope narrow enough to locate.
- Choose inspection or copies. Ask about electronic delivery, paper duplication, certification, eligibility, and any fee before work begins.
- Review the response. If material is withheld, read the cited exemption. Clarify or narrow an overbroad request, and use the agency’s review route when a denial appears unsupported.
California’s official CPRA materials outline public-record definitions and fee rules. For a Temple City request, the city form’s record-description box asks for type, dates, subject, and title. Saving the submission and response creates a clean record of the exchange.
